Manganese Dioxide

Catalog NO.: TFMMOM-0027 Category: Metal Oxide

Manganese dioxide is a black amorphous powder or black orthorhombic crystal. It is a stable oxide of manganese commonly found in pyrolusite and manganese nodules. Its main use is in the production of dry cells, such as carbon-zinc and alkaline batteries. It also catalyzes chemical reactions and as a strong oxidizing agent in acidic solutions. MnO₂ is a non-amphoteric (non-salt-forming) oxide. It is a very stable black powder at room temperature, acting as a depolarizer in dry cells. It is a strong oxidizer that does not burn itself but supports combustion, so it should not be stored with flammable materials.

Chemical Formula MnO2
Storage This product should be stored in a sealed container in a cool, dry environment. Avoid prolonged exposure to air and moisture to prevent agglomeration, which may negatively impact dispersibility and performance. Additionally, avoid heavy pressure or stacking.

Dry Cells (Batteries): Acts as a depolarizer in carbon-zinc and alkaline batteries.
Glass Industry: Effective decolorizer that oxidizes ferrous salts to ferric salts, changing the blue-green tint of glass to weak yellow.
Electronics: Used to produce manganese-zinc ferrite magnetic materials.
Steel & Foundry: Raw material for ferro-manganese alloys and as a heating agent in casting.
Gas Masks: Absorber for carbon monoxide.
Chemical Industry: Used as an oxidizing agent (e.g., in alizarin synthesis), a catalyst for organic synthesis, and a drier for paints and inks.
Ceramics & Enamel: Raw material for glazes and manganese salts.
Other Uses: Fireworks, water purification (iron removal), medicine, fertilizers, and textile printing.
