Key Features

Removes dissolved calcium ions; lowers the pH of the drilling fluid.

Applications

In water-based drilling fluids, sodium bicarbonate reacts with dissolved calcium ions to form precipitates for cement contamination treatment.

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is commonly used to remove dissolved calcium ions and is the preferred product for treating cement contamination. It serves two fundamental functions: removing dissolved calcium ions and lowering the pH of drilling fluids. When used onsite, it must be added through a funnel. Excessive use of sodium bicarbonate can lead to carbonate and bicarbonate contamination, causing issues such as drilling fluid rheology changes and fluid loss.
