• Removes dissolved calcium ions; lowers the pH of the drilling fluid.
In water-based drilling fluids, sodium bicarbonate reacts with dissolved calcium ions to form precipitates for cement contamination treatment.
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃) is commonly used to remove dissolved calcium ions and is the preferred product for treating cement contamination. It serves two fundamental functions: removing dissolved calcium ions and lowering the pH of drilling fluids. When used onsite, it must be added through a funnel. Excessive use of sodium bicarbonate can lead to carbonate and bicarbonate contamination, causing issues such as drilling fluid rheology changes and fluid loss.

| Recommended Dosage | The amount of sodium bicarbonate required to treat 1 kg/m³ of dissolved calcium ions is: 2.1 kg/m³; in case of severe cement contamination, the amount of sodium bicarbonate needs to be doubled or tripled. |
