Calcium oxide, also known as quicklime or burnt lime, reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide. In calcium-based drilling fluids, lime is used to supply calcium ions, controlling the hydration and dispersion capacity of clays to maintain them in a moderately flocculated state. Additionally, quicklime serves as the primary source of calcium and alkalinity in oil-based drilling fluids. In humid and rainy environments, calcium hydroxide is recommended over calcium oxide. In traditional oil-based drilling fluid systems, quicklime can react with emulsifiers to form calcium soaps. When quicklime reacts with water, it releases heat that aids emulsification reactions. When encountering acidic gases (such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide), quicklime provides alkalinity in oil-based drilling fluids.
