The Challenge

Premature Seal Degradation in Amine Contactor Lean/Rich Heat Exchanger Valves

A Middle Eastern gas processing plant experienced repeated leakage from the control valve stem seals on their amine contactor system. The seals, specified as standard FKM, exhibited severe chemical attack and swelling after only six months of service, leading to fugitive emissions and unplanned shutdowns during peak production periods. Analysis of the process fluid revealed high concentrations of H₂S and amine degradation products that aggressively attacked the fluorocarbon polymer backbone.

The Solution: Upgraded FFKM Compound and Fugitive Emissions Packing

AIMRSE recommended a high-performance FFKM compound specifically formulated for amine and H₂S resistance. The new stem packing arrangement incorporated a live-loaded spring-energized PTFE V-ring set with a secondary FFKM O-ring as a chemical barrier. Finite element analysis of the packing gland confirmed optimal compression for low-friction operation while maintaining a leak-tight seal at 50 bar process pressure.

MTBM Increased from 6 to 48 Months

Do you provide material certifications for NACE MR0175 compliance?
Yes. We supply full 3.1 material certification per EN 10204, including chemical analysis, mechanical properties, and heat treatment records. For sour service components, we provide NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance statements and, upon request, HIC/SSC test reports from accredited laboratories.
Can you supply components with ATEX or IECEx certification?
Our electric motors and geared motors are available with ATEX and IECEx certification for gas (Zone 1, II 2G Ex db IIB T4) and dust (Zone 21, II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130°C) hazardous areas. Certification documents, including EC-Type Examination Certificates and Declarations of Conformity, are provided with every shipment.
What seal materials are compatible with amine and sour gas?
For H₂S and amine service, we recommend perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) compounds such as Kalrez® or Chemraz®. In less severe applications, HNBR with high acrylonitrile content or specific FKM grades (e.g., Viton® GFLT) may be suitable. Our lab can perform compatibility testing with your specific fluid sample.
Do you offer reverse engineering for obsolete refinery valve actuators?
Absolutely. We reverse-engineer legacy hydraulic and pneumatic actuators for refinery gate, globe, and butterfly valves. Using 3D scanning and material analysis, we manufacture replacement cylinders and seal kits that are dimensionally interchangeable with the original, often with upgraded materials for improved reliability.
What is your lead time for custom high-pressure cylinders for wellhead control panels?
Standard lead time is 10–14 weeks from drawing approval for custom HPUs and actuator cylinders. For critical wellhead projects, we offer expedited manufacturing programs that can reduce lead time to 6–8 weeks, subject to material mill availability.
