Introduction

An Industrial Lighting System is the most critical component for creating high-contrast, reliable images in machine vision. Unlike ambient lighting, industrial vision lights are designed to highlight specific features of a target while suppressing unwanted reflections and noise. By utilizing LED technology with precise wavelengths and specialized geometries (such as ring, back, or coaxial lights), these systems provide the optical foundation necessary for stable defect detection, barcode reading, and dimensional measurement in automated production lines.
Working Principle
1. Controlled Emission
High-intensity LEDs emit light at specific wavelengths (Visible, IR, or UV) to interact with the material properties of the target object.
2. Feature Contrast
Light reflects, scatters, or transmits through the object, creating a high-contrast optical signal that emphasizes defects, edges, or characters.
3. Optical Filtering
Specialized diffusers or polarizers are used to eliminate glare and ensure uniform illumination across the entire field of view.
4. Strobe Sync
The lighting pulse is synchronized with the camera's shutter through a controller, providing "overdriven" brightness to freeze high-speed motion.
Key Technical Specifications
-
Multi-Spectral Options
Available in standard White, Red, Blue, Green, as well as Near-Infrared (NIR) for penetrating surfaces and Ultra-Violet (UV) for fluorescence-based inspection. -
High-Uniformity LED Arrays
Utilizes precision-binned LEDs and engineered reflectors to ensure edge-to-edge brightness consistency, preventing false-negatives in quality control. -
Strobe Overdrive Capability
Designed to handle instantaneous high currents, allowing the system to produce light thousands of times brighter than ambient levels for microsecond exposures. -
Advanced Thermal Management
Features CNC-machined aluminum heat sinks and thermal-conductive substrates to ensure a long lifespan (50,000+ hours) even in continuous operation. -
Polarization Integration
Supports built-in or add-on polarizers to eliminate specular reflections from metallic or glossy surfaces like glass and plastic. -
Industrial Grade Sealing
Housings available with IP65/IP67 ratings for use in washdown food environments or dusty factory settings where lens and light protection is vital.
Common Lighting Geometries
Ring & Dome Lights
Provides shadowless, 360-degree illumination. Ideal for general-purpose inspection and highlighting features on reflective, curved, or uneven surfaces.
Backlights (Silhouetting)
Placed behind the object to create a sharp silhouette. The gold standard for precision dimensional gauging and detecting presence/absence of holes.
Bar & Darkfield Lights
Bar lights provide directional side-lighting, while Darkfield lights use low-angle illumination to highlight surface scratches and dust on flat substrates.
Coaxial Lights
Uses an internal beam splitter to align light rays with the camera's optical axis. Perfect for inspecting flat, specular (mirror-like) surfaces to reveal subtle surface defects or engravings.
Typical Applications
Defect Detection
Using Darkfield or Coaxial lighting to reveal microscopic scratches on polished metal parts or cracks in glass screens.
Code Reading & OCR
Providing high-contrast illumination to read DPM (Direct Part Marking) laser-etched codes on metallic engine components.
Food & Beverage
IP67-rated waterproof lighting used for fill-level inspection, cap orientation, and label verification on high-speed bottling lines.
Selection Guide
Precision imaging starts with superior lighting design. At AIMRSE, we help you master the "Art of Light" to ensure your machine vision system sees exactly what it needs:
- Wavelength Optimization: Matching the light color to the object color to either "absorb" or "reflect" specific features (e.g., using Red light on a Blue part to darken it).
- Geometry Analysis: Selecting the angle of incidence based on whether the surface is specular (reflective) or diffuse (matte).
- Working Distance: Balancing the light's intensity and divergence against the physical constraints of the robotic cell or machine frame.
- Strobe vs. Continuous: Deciding between continuous light for slow processes and strobe mode to freeze motion and extend LED life in high-speed lines.
Interface & Control Standards
Our lighting systems are designed for seamless integration with industrial controllers and PLC logic:
- Analog/Digital Dimming: Supports 0-10V or PWM signal control for precise brightness adjustment.
- Standardized Cables: Utilizes M12 or M8 industrial circular connectors for secure, vibration-proof connections.
- Power Efficiency: Optimized 24V DC circuitry ensures low energy consumption and compatibility with standard factory power.
