Introduction

A Line Scan Industrial Camera captures images by reading a single row of pixels at a time, building a continuous 2D image as the target moves past the sensor. Unlike area scan cameras, line scan technology is specifically designed for high-speed web inspection, continuous material flows, and ultra-high-resolution imaging of large-scale objects. By eliminating the perspective distortion found at the edges of 2D sensors, line scan cameras provide superior image uniformity and are the preferred choice for inspecting rotating parts, textiles, paper, and semiconductor wafers where infinite frame length or sub-micron precision is required.
Working Principle
1. Synchronous Acquisition
The linear sensor array captures a single row of data with ultra-high line rates (>100 kHz). An external rotary encoder triggers each line at precise spatial intervals, eliminating distortion from speed fluctuations.
2. Seamless Reconstruction
Sequential line data is buffered and stacked by the camera’s internal processor or dedicated frame grabber, reconstructing a continuous high‑resolution 2D image map with pixel‑perfect geometry.
3. Stream & Analysis
The continuous pixel stream is transmitted via high‑bandwidth interfaces (Camera Link, CoaXPress) to a host system, enabling real‑time defect detection, inspection, and advanced analytics.
Key Technical Specifications
-
High Line Rates (up to 200kHz)
Capable of capturing tens of thousands of lines per second, enabling high-resolution inspection on production lines moving at several meters per second. -
Ultra-High Horizontal Resolution
Sensors ranging from 2k to 16k pixels per line allow for massive fields of view without sacrificing the Ground Sample Distance (GSD) or detail. -
TDI (Time Delay Integration)
Advanced multi-line sensors that sum multiple exposures of the same moving target to drastically increase sensitivity in low-light, high-speed applications. -
Sub-pixel Spatial Accuracy
Eliminates the "smearing" and geometric distortion inherent in area scan sensors when imaging cylindrical objects or fast-moving continuous webs. -
Flexible Image Length
Allows for "infinite" vertical resolution, making it possible to inspect continuous rolls of material (steel, film, paper) without breaks between frames.
Typical Applications
Web & Continuous Materials
High-speed surface defect detection for paper, plastic film, and textiles, ensuring perfect uniformity across infinite material lengths without frame gaps.
New Energy & Batteries
Critical inspection of electrode coating thickness, scratches, and edge irregularities during high-speed roll-to-roll battery manufacturing processes.
Steel & Metallurgy
Real-time quality monitoring of hot-rolled steel and aluminum coils, identifying scale, cracks, and surface defects at high transport velocities.
