Introduction

A Smart Camera is an all-in-one vision system that integrates image acquisition, high-speed processing, and communication interfaces into a single compact housing. Unlike standard industrial cameras that require an external PC to process data, a smart camera performs onboard algorithmic analysis and executes logic locally. This "edge-computing" approach reduces system footprint, eliminates complex cabling, and provides real-time deterministic results, making it the preferred choice for decentralized automation and high-speed pass/fail inspection tasks.
Working Principle
1. Integrated Capture
The internal sensor captures high-quality image data, often utilizing built-in lighting and autofocus lenses to ensure consistent illumination and focus on the target.
2. Onboard Analysis
The embedded processor (FPGA/DSP) executes pre-loaded vision algorithms—such as pattern matching or OCR—directly on the raw data without latency.
3. Decision Logic
Based on the inspection results, the camera applies user-defined logic rules to determine a Pass/Fail status or calculate specific dimensional coordinates.
4. Signal Execution
Results are sent directly to a PLC via industrial protocols or triggered as physical electrical pulses to reject defective parts from the production line.
