Introduction

ToF Depth Camera

A ToF (Time-of-Flight) Depth Camera is an active imaging sensor that measures the distance between the camera and the object for every pixel in the image. By emitting modulated infrared light pulses and measuring the "time of flight" it takes for the light to reflect back to the sensor, the camera generates a high-resolution 3D point cloud and depth map in real-time. Unlike traditional stereo vision, ToF technology offers a compact form factor, high frame rates, and exceptional performance in low-contrast environments, making it a cornerstone for autonomous robotics, logistics, and human-machine interaction.

Working Principle

1. Signal Emission

The camera's integrated illumination unit emits synchronized pulses of near-infrared (NIR) light across the entire scene simultaneously.

2. Reflection Capture

The light bounces off targets and returns to the high-speed CMOS sensor, which captures the reflected photons with nanosecond precision.

3. Phase Shift Analysis

Onboard processors calculate the phase shift or time delay between emission and reception to determine the exact distance (Z-axis) for each pixel.

4. 3D Map Output

The data is converted into a calibrated 3D point cloud or depth map, ready for navigation, volume analysis, or object recognition.
